Chibi Otaku and Ultra Maniac

We've watched volumes 2-5 now and they are getting used to watching it with me. I've starting making them herbal tea to drink while watching. Their mother accused me of creating Mini-Mes.

SPOILERS

We were about to watch it, when Hannah (aged 6) came up to me and started jumping up-and-down, up-and-down. She asked, still jumping, "Ultra Maniac is the coolest show ever, isn't it?" I agreed that it was.
Actually, the animation quality drops severely from volume 4 onward. I don't me… Continue

Ultra Maniac vol. 1 - my nieces' reactions

A couple of weeks before showing my nieces Ultramaniac, I told them the story as I remembered it from the manga.

They had trouble with the names Ayu and Nina but not the characters - serious tennis player and ditzy witch respectively.

Hannah asked why Ayu's face turned blue sometimes. I told her it happened when Ayu was upset. Hannah told me that my face got red when I was upset, not blue. (Kids. Way. Too. Direct.)

I explained that Ayu had a crush on Kaji and that's why there were so many pin… Continue

my nieces' reactions to anime

I've been showing my nieces some anime recently.

They are Emma 8 and Hannah 6 (not their real names), and they love princesses. I asked Clovous and Mercilous for some recommendations, so I could put a bunch of kid friendly anime on my NF queue.

I showed them Pretear because I own it and it's sparkly and princess-y. They loved it.

Some of their reactions were kind of cute.

Emma told me sternly at one point that it wasn't nice of Himeno to be naked during her transformation scene. I tol… Continue

Ok so I guess the lesson shall have to begin. BT stands for Bit Tracker. Welcome to the digital world beautiful, where information is disintegrated into little pieces that can be shared amongst everyone. The IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. I've actually been seriously thinking about starting an IRC channel for Newtypezone, but I'm not sure how many people actually IRC around here. Plus we already have our own real time chat system. But when one masters the IRC, sharing information is at the tips of your fingers. For a complete guide on the IRC go HERE.

I love your page! Especially the header!! And don't forget that quote...wasn't that in the first episode? I downloaded it for free on iTunes and now I'm desperately anticipating for NF to release it.

Let's see...I think the last documentary I saw that really left an impression was one called Inside North Korea. Very, very scary...mostly b/c it's real. I love anything with Lisa LIng in it.

Anime-wise, I just finished episode 13 of The Big Windup which is a sports anime dealing with baseball. I'm identifying with it since I played fast pitch softball in high school...I played right field and first base. It really has me laughing cause my coach was really similar to the coach on the anime. I've also been working on Negima...but I put that off to watch Windup. I'm addicted!!! I think I should be getting Nana soon...I can't wait!!!

My summer's been pretty laid back. Just catching up on my anime and of course my NF movies. Lately though, I've been on a real documentary kick. I don't know why exactly but I'm hooked on anything dealing with National Geographic. How's your summer going?

I can't really stand the streaming sites, but BT comes in really handy. If I'm really impatient then the IRC is always a click away too. But ya buying anime can get very expensive. You can ask Origami too. A while back me him had a spending contest which I think left us both with a stock pile of shit to watch. I think I burned through my entire tax return on Anime this year too. I'm still watching series from that last binge. LoL Yesterday I got a bug up my ass and bought the the two part GTO series. It is very true that when you don't buy series when they are released, that eventually they do become more expensive if they go out of print, which they usually do within the first six months of the original pressing. Cardcaptor Sakura is a perfect example of how expensive anime can become. If you follow the link you'll know what I'm talking about. Usually the imports can be ok, but for the actual R1 release that Geneon version, which is the best version, is almost 800$.

From what I've noticed NF really only restocks when new versions are released. Once those disk get broken or go missing they just don't replace them. That is my end conclusion. This has been a major problem with NF for quite some time. We've complained and even petitioned them and they did start getting better but it looks like they do have their limits. That's why unfortunately my strategy lately is to watch enough of what NF has in stock to see if I want to purchase. Yes it gets expensive to watch an entire series this way, but well, at least I have a hard copy and a collectors item. If that doesn't work then fansubbs, streaming sites, or imports are your last options.
