- Wandering through a Jurassic fog, I stumbled into a burly, rather hairy woman carrying a huge wooden club. "Ning?" she asked.
I answered. "Yup," and here I am. I think her name was Bertha and she might have been looking for BuBBa...
- What are your tastes in Japanese Anime?
- Japanese Anime usually follows solid film making fundamentals with stories most frequently leaning heavily into science fiction and fantasy genres. Sci-fi and fantasy always gets my attention My taste leans more to adult subjects and with complexity. I have epic anime like "Kurau Phantom Memory" to be fascinating. Orbiting around a small group of pre-teen friends is a mulitlayered tale of intrigue and cutthroat politics. I enjoyed the series. Collections like "Cowboy Bebop" are simply fun.
Eclectic to say the least, I will watch anything that doesn't portend to my grueling, personal painful demise in real time.
I appreciate and respect ground breaking directors who shatter convention and wrangle the industry into new directions. Catherine Breillat would come to mind, as would Takashi Miike, Ingmar Bergman, David Lynch, Chan-wook Park - the list goes on.
Aside from the abundance of science fiction and fantasy, my movie collection is quite balanced. You'll find classics, period, costume and contemporary drama. There’s romance and romantic comedy, a large section on foreign film and an even larger section for independent productions. I like the little gems that sneak in under the radar - ones you don't find on Netflix. Examples are "the Monkey's Mask" with Suzie Porter and Kelly McGillis or Larry Clark’s “Ken Park” that Netflix lists but never makes available. I even enjoy blockbuster popcorn movies when the occasional need to go brain dead comes over me. (smile)
